The ridiculous thing is that we don’t give terrorists enough credit to be able to somehow infiltrate the starbucks shipping guy (or coke/water vendor) on the terminal side of the airport — and that is all it would take nowadays. Not to mention the whole 3oz containers thing, because there are plenty of dangerous liquids that need less than 3 oz.

It is all the illusion of security, because like the old TSA tests used to show, a water bottle was more likely to be found that their internal test case bombs.

Les, totally agree with you. Last week I went shopping at the local supermarket, they hired a security guy who asked me to leave my small backpack at the counter before entering the store. Apparently someone with a backpack had been steeling stuff and now a pack was a nono in the store. I simply refused to leave my pack, ignored the guy and did my shopping. What’s next? Leaving my pants at the store front because someone stuffed his pockets with toothpaste and ran? Come on.

Hahahaha thats hilarious. I mean on one hand it is ridiculous, but on the other hand…there are still a lot of crazy people out there who would think of putting something in their yogurt to get on to a plane. On the other hand, I’ve brought candy and gum with me through security and no one cares…thats Philadelphia for you though.

It always amazes me that security goes that far, yet is so lax in and around the airports. Before 9/11, we had fine security in our country, they just decided not to act on intelligence they had. Now we have no rights, and we are chasing shadows instead of mounting Bin Ladens head on a wall! Whattayagonnado!
Les, you the man!
Would love to walk the wilderness with you once, just don’t ditch me…

Wow that’s wild. I didn’t really think that they would actually refuse a yogurt. Furthermore, even if they did refuse to let you through with it I really can’t believe they wouldn’t even let the employee take it back to the original shop.

o.O See this is why I like my dad driving me places. He hates flying, I never have. It’s not the plane that’ll kill you, just the security drives you bonkers.

If you brought the yogurt from home, I would understand because there are liquid explosives and such that could be administered into a yogurt with a syringe or something, but if you bought it from the Starbucks it should have been fine (maybe you’d have to provide a receipt, but that’s it).

Ya gotta wonder if the security guy was going way past the limit or if – and I suspect this is the case – he was just following the precise letter of his formal job obligations to ensure that he stays out of trouble and in a job? Maybe he was a bit punchy & over the top from having a rough day, but I’ll bet it more a case of self-preservation.

I’m as easily frustrated as the next guy but more often than not, I kinda empathize with those poor TSA folks. They’re just trying to earn a living too. And they’re hog-tied by insane bureaucracy to perform job tasks that are beyond reason or ration.

Hey Les, ya I agree that security is getting a little out of hand but then maybe its just being Canadian. I had a really bad experience with US Border patrol and law enforcement dudes for doing nothing wrong. Just trying to make an honest living (driving truck) and I was treated like a criminal or terrists. They accused me of numerous false accusations, ran-sacked my truck (finding nothing) and TRIED to make me loose my temper on them just to arrest me FOR NOTHING! I kept my cool and showed them friendly Canadian respect even though I didn’t get any back. It sure wasn’t a friendly US welcome for my first trip down there. So glad when I got back HOME to the greatest country in the world, CANADA! Stay safe and keep up the great work!

I agree with you Les but what I want to know is… Why aren’t such things mentioned at the Starbucks before you reach Security? I’m more than certain that the situation, no matter how asinine, is well known so why didn’t the FIRST Starbucks have a sign informing you that the yogurt couldn’t go through security?

It has gone too far, and I doubt things will be getting any better in the near future. I agree with the statements above that this is not so much about security, as it is about control, and for show. Those who would do harm, will do it, no matter how many rules are made, no matter how many checkpoints are in place. I think too many times rules are made that are not properly thought out, and security personnel are encouraged to follow procedure rather than using their personal judgement to determine if there is a risk or not. While security is worrying about procedure, harmful people and products are slipping through, and harmless people are being annoyed and delayed. Very frustrating! and not helpful to anyone, except the evil doers, as usual.

Long time watcher of Survivorman. First time posting… Les, this is the best video blog you’ve done yet. In years past I traveled via air every day for work. During bad weeks I would hit as many as 4 or 5 states every day (don’t ask). The current state of our air industry is one of the biggest reasons I don’t travel by air any longer. I drive or take a train. The extra cost is just transferred to the customer.

And let me leave you with this tid-bit. Try traveling with a one way ticket! I did that once to pick up a truck from New Mexico to bring back to Michigan. Apparently it’s the ultimate red flag for a terrorist alert or something. Come on, do terrorists buy one way tickets to save money because they aren’t coming back??? Give me a friggin break. Good bye airline industry. You’re putting your selves out of business.

I agree with you, I mean security is very good but they have gone way too far in some areas, and trust me if you had a middlestern background they would have even arrested you maybe too and could find some lame excuse later. I’m from a half Euro half midleesteren background I’ve had some bad experiences unfortunately that aren’t fair at all but there is not much that can be done. security again its good for all of us but unfair insults is a different story you sort of have to be in the person’s shoe to understand if you know what I mean, thanks for the blog Less and the updates.

Gone too far is right, and the sad thing about it all is – it’s a big SHOW put on to pacify people to give them the illusion of safety! Because lemme tell ya, if someone is bound and determined to cause damage on a plane, on a train, in a house or with a mouse (thanks Dr. Seuss) – they will find a way no matter how many containers of yougurt are thrown in the trash. That kind of risk is unfortunately part of our lives now…

It is all the illusion of security, because like the old TSA tests used to show, a water bottle was more likely to be found that their internal test case bombs.

Lots of Middle Eastern dishes use yogurt, you know?

I personally can’t believe you thought you could bring that probiotic, (possibly cherry-flavored), terror-treat anywhere near an airport. This Starbuck’s should be investigated, and, hopefully, it can be replaced by the Freedom-Loving™ Tim Horton’s.
