Les Stroud Hockey Pro Survivor Challenge in Hornepayne Ontario has raised over $100,000 (and still counting) for the repairs and rebuilding of the Hornepayne hockey arena! A big thank you to all of those who participated and donated funds, including the Trillium Fund and Hydro One.

Although some questioned Blues Traveler as a suitable major festival headliner in the year 2009, the band proved on Saturday night that they’ve still got their H.O.R.D.E. tour chops. All of John Popper’s past dramas haven’t affected his harp playing, and while “Run Around” and “Hook” came off tired, “But Anyway” sounded good as new. Popper brought outSurvivorman’s Les Stroud to jam with him, and the outdoor badass/TV star showed up and held his own with America’s most famous harmonica player in one of the weekend’s most anticipated (and downright cool) moments.

I was lost when I first heard of Les Stroud. Sure, I didn’t know his name just yet, and fine, I wasn’t even outdoors; but as an uncertain 16 year-old with a burning passion for the wilderness in a commercial world, lost indeed was I when I was first shown ‘Survivorman’. As the first notes of Stroud’s primordial chanting filled the room, I was hooked. Little did I know how much my life was about to change.

Stroud blew me away time and time again: Survivorman, Snowshoes & Solitude, Off the Grid, survival instructor, and at one time a guide canoeing for Black Feather. Then to learn that this local Canadian is also a singer/songwriter floored me. Once again, I was gripped by this man’s work, effortlessly it seemed. Soon enough I had memorized everything Les created.

One of the greatest highlights of my life was being a part of ‘Voices in the Wilderness: An Evening with Les Stroud’. His music is more than notes on a page, strummed from a guitar; it is the voice of the Canadian North. That combined with his epic film footage and powerful stage presence made for one helluva night. A night never easily forgotten.

I’ve met the man twice to date, never missing an opportunity, both times further reinforced his influence in my life. I’d dreamed of a life in the wilderness but never thought it possible until Les proved otherwise. Now, two years later, my passion is burning fiercer yet, my eyes focused, and my heart free. I am an aspiring musician with a room full of Survivorman merchandise and a life in the wilderness ahead of me. This and more I owe to the great inspiration I find in Les Stroud.

And that is why I am Les Stroud’s ultimate fan.

In the tradition of the hit series Survivorman, Survive This! follows in Les Stroud’s footsteps by empowering kids to explore their connection to the wild.

Eight kids between the ages of 14 to 16 are taken into the wilderness with Les Stroud as their mentor. Survivorman’s Les Stroud hosts this look at how best to play it safe in the water, while testing popular theories of how to survive shark encounters. Stroud travels to the Bahamas and South Africa to test whether the behaviour of Caribbean reef sharks and great whites changes depending upon the time of day. While in South Africa, Stroud and marine biologist Jeremiah Sullivan conduct an analysis of the great white’s bite, test whether kicking and splashing attracts sharks and determines whether it’s safer to stay in a group or tread water alone if stranded in the ocean.
